A relentless dedication to education.

The Riverdale Foundation was founded in 1993 in response to several legislative changes implemented across the state. As far back as 1898, the Riverdale community had supported the District’s outstanding educational program through local control of their tax levels. However, with Oregon’s passage of Measure 5 in 1990, the amount of school funding available from local property taxes was severely constrained.

Measures 47 and 50 passed in 1996 and 1997 respectively, and effectively reduced property taxes even further. Local school funding essentially moved to Salem, and the state took action to replace a portion of the revenue loss to localities. However, that funding was not enough to provide the level of education so many Riverdale families had come to expect.

At approximately the same time voters were reducing their property taxes, the Oregon legislature passed the Oregon Education Act which required that every district provide a K-12 education to its constituents. Riverdale had been a K-8 district only. Understanding the importance of remaining an independent district, the Riverdale community approved a bond measure in 1996 establishing Riverdale High School. This added further cost to the district and when coupled with decreased taxes and state funding, meant that the Riverdale school district no longer had the means to provide the exceptional education its constituents desired and had previously funded.

The community realized this and created the Riverdale Foundation in 1993 to support the continuation of the long-established, community-supported, exemplary education the Riverdale School District had always provided. It is the job of the Riverdale School Foundation to help ensure that every Riverdale student has the opportunity to pursue an excellent education.
